Key Takeaways

  • Entirely textile-based - no metal hardware to strike and damage a carbon fiber UAV fuselage on rebound.
  • Manual, intentional activation only - zero accidental or premature release before touchdown.
  • Built from the same high-strength webbing as the parachute system: seamless integration and equal service life.
  • Validated under extreme opening shocks, full mission cycles, and harsh environmental exposure.

A soft three-ring release mechanism – ultra-lightweight, damage-free separation for UAVs and parachutes.

When a recovery parachute has done its job, it has to let go, cleanly, on command, and without metal hardware slamming into a carbon fiber airframe. This is how APCO replaced the classic metal three-ring release with an all-textile one.

The Challenge

The customer required a super lightweight release solution for UAV recovery. Traditional metal three-ring systems posed two critical issues:

  • Damage risk – in the event of rebound, hard metal hardware could strike and damage the UAV’s carbon fiber body.
  • Unwanted release – previous experiences with automatically engaging/releasing systems caused premature separation before touchdown, resulting in damage and mission failure.

The challenge was to design a fully textile release mechanism that avoided these risks while remaining reliable, serviceable, and simple to integrate.

Our Solution

APCO Aviation Defense developed a completely soft three-ring release mechanism, manufactured from the same high-strength webbing and textile materials as the parachute system itself. This ensured seamless integration, equal service life, and no changes required in handling or storage practices.

Ultra-Lightweight, Damage-Free Design

  • Entirely textile-based – no metal hardware.
  • Prevents any damage in the event of rebound against UAV fuselage.
  • Extremely strong and compact, maintaining full deployment safety.

Controlled, Manual Release

  • Designed for active engagement/activation only – preventing any accidental or premature release.
  • Customer gains full control of parachute detachment timing.
  • Optimized specifically for ground-touchdown separation scenarios.

Mission-Ready Advantages

  • Withstands extreme parachute opening shock without failure.
  • Serviceable within the same cycles as the parachute canopy.
  • Customized to UAV recovery missions, cargo drops, and defense applications.

Types of Release Mechanisms

Results

  • Safe for UAVs – protects carbon fiber fuselages from impact damage.
  • Zero accidental openings – only releases when manually activated.
  • Lightweight advantage – eliminates heavy metal components while retaining strength.
  • Full lifecycle integration – matches parachute service intervals and storage protocols.

Testing & Validation

The soft three-ring release mechanism has been tested under:

  • Extreme opening shocks – proven strength with no accidental release.
  • Full mission cycles – validating reliability in UAV recovery operations.
  • Environmental exposure – resistant to dust, sand, saltwater, and high/low temperatures.

Testing confirms that the soft release mechanism provides maximum mission safety, eliminating the disadvantages of traditional metal hardware in UAV applications.

FAQ

Frequently
Asked
Questions

Find quick answers about our solutions, capabilities, and how we work.

What is a soft three-ring release mechanism?

A soft three-ring release mechanism is a fully textile-based separation system that replaces traditional metal three-ring hardware, enabling lightweight, damage-free release in UAV and parachute applications.

Why use a textile release mechanism instead of metal hardware for UAVs?

Textile release mechanisms eliminate the risk of hard metal components striking and damaging carbon fiber UAV structures, especially during rebound after landing, while also reducing system weight.

How does APCO’s release mechanism prevent accidental release?

APCO’s soft three-ring release mechanism is designed for manual, intentional activation only, preventing any automatic or premature release before touchdown and ensuring full operator control.

Is the soft three-ring release mechanism suitable for UAV recovery systems?

Yes. The mechanism is specifically designed for UAV recovery, where lightweight construction, controlled separation timing, and protection of sensitive airframe materials are critical.

Can the release mechanism withstand parachute opening shock?

Yes. The soft three-ring release mechanism is engineered to withstand extreme parachute opening shocks without failure, while maintaining secure engagement until manually released.

Has the soft three-ring release mechanism been tested and validated?

Yes. The system has undergone extensive testing, including extreme opening shock loads, full mission cycles, and environmental exposure such as dust, sand, saltwater, and temperature extremes.
