THE CHALLENGE

Traditional UAV recovery systems rely mostly on round or cruciform parachutes, which are limited in maneuverability and accuracy. The challenge was to merge two technologies – advanced ram air parachutes from the skydiving industry and UAV platforms – to achieve safe in-flight deployment, precise steering, and pinpoint landings. In addition, the parachute needed to fit within restricted UAV compartments, demanding an ultra-lightweight and low-bulk design without compromising strength or reliability.

OUR SOLUTION

Apco Defence Industries developed a completely soft three-ring release mechanism, manufactured from the same high-strength webbing and textile materials as the parachute system itself. This ensured seamless integration, equal service life, and no changes required in handling or storage practices.

APCO Defense Industries developed a specialized ram air parachute designed for UAV recovery. Made from extremely light yet durable materials, it packs efficiently into compact UAV compartments while maintaining full strength and service life.

To protect the UAV during deployment, the parachute is equipped with a slider that mitigates opening shock forces. This ensures safe and reliable deployment even from straight and level UAV flight, reducing stress on the airframe.

Once deployed, the parachute delivers full steerability with a glide path ratio of approximately 1:4.5. It enables precise navigation, pinpoint accuracy within a 4-foot radius, and flaring capability before touchdown – dramatically improving landing safety and minimizing ground impact.
