UAV – Fixed-Wing Platforms

Fixed-wing UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) and manned aircraft that deploy parachutes in flight—without the vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) hover requirement—depend on advanced recovery systems for safe and reliable landings. At APCO Defence Industries, we design and manufacture parachute solutions specifically for fixed-wing platforms, delivering optimized performance, safety, and mission success.

Primary Parachute Applications for Fixed-Wing UAVs

1. Standard Landing Procedure – Replacing Landing Gear

Certain UAVs eliminate traditional landing gear, using a launcher or catapult for take-off and a parachute for landing.

  • Advantages: Lower weight and drag, simplifying the airframe design while increasing payload capacity and aerodynamic efficiency.
  • Design Features: For heavier UAVs, airbags may be integrated for added impact protection. Parachutes can be steerable or non-steerable, tailored to mission needs.
  • Multiple-Use Capability: Parachutes and airbags are built for repeated deployments.
  • Controlled Deployment: In straight-and-level flight, a longer deployment window allows slider systems to reduce opening shock to as low as 3G, depending on flight speed, preventing airframe damage.

2. Emergency Deployment

Emergency recovery parachutes are designed for deployment at any airspeed – up to terminal velocity – in critical situations.

  •  Key Engineering Factors:
    • Structural integrity of the airframe and attachment points
    • Tolerance for high G-loads during deployment
    • Consistent inflation in extreme flight conditions, including spins and unusual attitudes

Additional Design & Operational Considerations

  • Environmental Resistance: Materials and construction must withstand UV exposure, extreme temperatures, and moisture to ensure readiness in all climates.
  • Integration with Avionics: Recovery systems can be linked with onboard sensors and autopilot controls for automated decision-making during emergencies.
  • Maintenance & Inspection Protocols: Easy access to the parachute bay and modular components allows for rapid turnaround between missions.
  • Compliance & Certification: Systems can be engineered to meet military standards, EN certification, and other aviation regulatory requirements for defense and commercial applications.
  • Payload Adaptability: Parachute size and deployment sequence can be optimized for varying payload weights and mission profiles.

Parachute Integration Considerations

  • Internal Bay Design: Requires early coordination in the UAV design phase for proper size, location, and integration.
  • Door and Release Systems: Must ensure clean, consistent openings; may serve as drogue chutes or link directly to the main canopy.
