Cargo Parachutes

For cargo air drops, there are 2 main approaches:.

Parachute cluster – this is a more cost-effective solution as it uses smaller more common parachutes. This solution allows to control the descent rate according to the type of cargo by adding or subtracting parachutes to the cluster.
One single large parachute usually round for very high payload, or alternatively when steering is necessary (GPADS) a parasail or RAM Air parachute (similar to sky diving) will be chosen.

In cargo parachutes weight and volume are not a priority and therefore these are robust products made from the most durable, strong materials.

Lightweight, low-volume solutions for cargo are available, but will reduce the usage conditions envelope as drops at very high speeds will threaten the structural integrity of the lighter materials.

To overcome the above, solutions like a decelerating drogue chute and opening slider are available.
